Trasi, August 15, 2026: The 80th Independence Day of India was celebrated with great patriotic spirit and enthusiasm at Don Bosco School on 15 August 2026. The celebration was organised to commemorate the nation’s independence, remind everyone of the sacrifices of our freedom fighters, and highlight the responsibilities of being proud citizens of India.
The celebration began with the flag-hoisting ceremony at 9:00 a.m. The school was honoured to have Sergeant Dinesh Acharya of the Indian Army as the Guest for Flag Hoisting. His presence added great pride and significance to the national ceremony. Drawing from his rich military background, Sergeant Acharya delivered an inspiring and action-oriented address heavily emphasizing the core concept of time management. In a powerful quote that resonated deeply with the young audience, he stated, “If we respect time today, in the future, time will give us respect.” He explained that the sacrifices, discipline, and hard work students put into managing their time today will directly dictate the success, honour, and stature they receive from society tomorrow.
Following this, the Rector and Principal, Rev. Fr. Maxim D’Souza, delivered a moving speech focusing on our roots. He reminded the students that we carry a lifelong debt to two mothers: first, the biological mother who gave us birth and nurtured us, and second, Bharathambe (Mother India) who gave us our life, freedom, and identity. He urged the students never to forget these two foundational pillars, emphasizing that true patriotism begins with love and respect for one’s parents and country. He also guided them to understand the importance of education, responsibility, discipline, and service to the nation.
The Cultural Programme commenced at 11:00 a.m. in the School Auditorium. The programme was graced by Sri Krishna Shettibettu, a former member of the Indian Army, as the Chief Guest, and Mr. Sohan D’Souza, Founder and CEO of SoVir Technology LLP and a past pupil, as the Guest of Honour. The Rector and Principal, Rev. Fr. Maxim D’Souza, along with the Vice Principal, Rev. Fr. Sandesh Fernandes, Administrator, Rev. Fr. Arnold Mathias, teachers, students, and guests, were present for the celebration.
The cultural programme commenced with a prayer seeking God’s blessings for the success of the event. This was followed by the ceremonial lighting of the lamp, symbolising knowledge, hope, unity, and the triumph of light over darkness.
A warm welcome address was delivered, followed by the introduction of the Chief Guest and Guest of Honour. The Chief Guest, Sri Krishna Shettibettu, addressed the gathering and shared inspiring thoughts on courage, discipline, sacrifice, service, and love for the nation. His words were especially meaningful to the students, reminding them of the values that contribute to building a strong nation. He encouraged the students to join the Indian Army, highlighting that dedicating one’s life to the service and protection of the country is the ultimate and most noble deed.
The highlight of the celebration was the cultural showcase, where students displayed their patriotism and talents through various performances. The Junior College students presented a patriotic dance, followed by an eloquent patriotic speech by Shawn T. Crasta of Class 7. The students of Class 9 then presented an energetic patriotic dance. Ezekiel J. D’Costa of Class 7 delivered an English speech, sharing deep thoughts on patriotism and love for our motherland. The programme concluded with a meaningful and powerful mime performance by the students of Class 11, portraying the beauty, struggles, diversity, unity, and spirit of India.
The Guest of Honour, Mr. Sohan D’Souza, an esteemed alumnus of the institution, delivered an insightful speech focusing on modern career readiness. He shifted the focus toward practical growth, strongly emphasizing that developing real-world skills is far more important than just scoring good marks in exams. He encouraged students to become active, lifelong learners to successfully navigate the competitive professional world.
The celebration concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Rihanna S. Lewis of Class 7. Finally, everyone stood with pride and respect for the National Anthem, bringing the celebration to a dignified close.
The 80th Independence Day celebration was a memorable occasion filled with patriotism, unity, discipline, creativity, and pride. It provided the students with a wonderful opportunity not only to celebrate India’s freedom but also to deeply understand their responsibility towards the nation.
